Our Ione Miwok Tribe
Ione Band of Miwok Indians, A Federally Recognized Tribe
( Government :: Sovereignty :: Culture :: History)
Thank you for taking a few moments to learn about the Ione Band of Miwok Indians, our people, our history and our future. The 700 members of the Ione Band are descendents of Nisenan and Miwok speaking people who lived throughout the Sacramento Valley and Sierra foothills.
Since our Tribe's federal recognition in March 1994, we have faced several challenges and obstacles. Yet we remain a focused and resilient people, ready to move forward on the path of true economic self-reliance. Our democratically elected tribal government has been working hard towards achieving our goal of establishing our tribal land base, which will provide the foundation for our future.
We are embarking on a long-awaited plan of economic development, which will include tribal government gaming. The revenue generated from economic development will allow us to offer housing, healthcare, educational programs, improve care for our elders, and maintain and preserve cultural activities, keeping our traditions alive for generations to come. The future is bright, and we thank our fellow members of the Ione Band of Miwok Indians and the greater community for their continued support.
We will be updating the site for more cultural and educational content for our Ione Band of Miwok Indian Tribal Members. Stay tuned as we add more cultural activities, photos, movies, language, and related Ione tribal administration departments to this website and the Ione tribal newsletter.
